This posting contains three mods for the ADI AR-247. They are extended
freq. coverage, S meter adjustment and, changing between hold scanning
and 3 second scanning. This is version 1.3 of the 247 mod guide. I
plan to update this if / when I find out other mods for this radio.
Out of Band Modification For the ADI AR-247
Extend Receive and transmit from 205.000 MHz to 239.995 MHz.
1. Take off the bottom cover (it may help to remove both covers), like
other ADI radios, there is a red wire that is about 1 inch long in the
front of the radio. Cut this wire and seal the ends so it does not
short out the microprocessor.
2. Reset the radio by holding the VFO key and powering the radio on,
turn the radio off and then reset the memory by holding the MR/M key
while powering the radio on.
Your radio should now receive and transmit from 205-239.995 MHz!
Notes: You may have to reset the radio a few times to get it to work,
but it will. I have done this to my radio and it works fine.
S-meter mod
The S meter on the 247 is not even remotely actuate. It reads what
should be a S-2 signal to be a S-9 signal. By Turing the Pot VR-1 (it
is on the main board next to the VCO) to the left, you can make the
meter read more accurately. Though the meter still reads high, it is
the best thing that can be done short of changing a resistor in the
radio. I may do this in the future but for now I just decided to live
with it.
Hold/Resume programming
How to do this in the manual is very sketchy. The wording is in very
broken English.
Here is how the manual says to do it on page 20 section 5-5-2:
1. Press the F key for longer than 1 second. The F indicator will Flash.
2. Within 10 seconds of pressing the F key. This will toggle the
Scan/Resume mode to carrier operated mode. And B indicator will be on.
Their procedure does not even tell you what key you have to press.
Here is how to do it.
1. Press the F key for one second.
2. Tap the F key. A B will appear over the hundreds place in the display.
I think ADI should have the manual retranslated to English here in
America. This would prevent misunderstandings from harping.
Thats all for now, if you discover any other mods please email me.
Happy tweaking,
